Following on from the success of their 2016 Award winning production of Evita (NODA London Best Musical) and other recent sell-out productions, Berkhamsted Theatre Company are bringing CHESS to The Court Theatre stage.

Written in 1984 by ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus alongside Tim Rice, CHESS is a story of love and political intrigue set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the 1980’s with the superpowers of USA and USSR attempting to manipulate an international chess championship for political ends…

…Two of the world’s greatest chess masters, one American, one Russian, are in danger of becoming the pawns of their governments as their battle for the world title gets under way. Their lives are thrown into further confusion by a woman who becomes the centre of their emotional triangle, mirroring the the political struggles that threaten to destroy lives and loves. When human lives become pieces on a political chess board, can anyone truly win?

Voted 7th on BBC Radio 2 listeners poll of essential musicals, CHESS includes the  hit singles ‘I Know Him So Well’ and ‘One Night In Bangkok’ with other well-known songs from one of the best scores written for theatre including ‘Anthem’, ‘Someone Else’s Story’ and ‘Heaven Help my Heart’.

Berkhamsted Theatre Company has established a reputation for producing Amateur Theatre of the highest quality that has audiences returning to our productions time and time again. Making a welcome return for this innovative production is director and choreographer of Berkhamsted Theatre Company’s award-winning production of Evita (NODA London Region Best Musical), David Rhys with Musical Direction by Graham Thomson (Avenue Q, Sister Act).
