The Hart Silversmiths – a living tradition

22 September – 8 December 2018

This exciting exhibition celebrates the remarkable tradition of silversmithing that has been carried out by the Hart family at The Guild in Chipping Campden for over one hundred years. Their workshop is the sole survivor of CR Ashbee’s Arts & Crafts Guild of Handicraft which relocated to Chipping Campden in 1902. Four generations of talented Hart silversmiths have worked in this workshop using the same tools and techniques. Back in the 1920s, George Henry Hart designed and made important commissions such as the Processional Cross for Gloucester Cathedral, later used at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, and the Royal Ascot Hunt Cup in the Goldsmiths’ Hall collection.

The Hart Silversmiths Trust was established in 2010 to care for and conserve the workshop’s unique drawings and design archive. This comprises over 3000 original historical drawings, many of which can be seen as works of art in their own right. A selection of drawings will be on display accompanied by historic arts and crafts silver including a stunning trophy for Derby Regatta Rowing Club, commissioned church silver and domestic silverware along with contemporary silver objects designed and crafted by the Harts in the 21st century.

Trish Hart will be giving a talk about this fascinating family story and there will be a discussion / demonstration by silversmith, David Hart on Thursday 4 October at 2.30pm. Tickets available from museum or via website www.buckscountymuseum.org

Come along and find out more about the craft of silversmithing and the Arts & Crafts movement.

Accompanying this display will be a small selection of silver across the centuries from the museum’s own collections and newly designed work by James Dougall, a local contemporary silversmith from Buckinghamshire.

Don’t miss the fabulous Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery for hands-on discovery and amazing science inspired by Roald Dahl’s wonderful stories.
