Chilterns MS Centre, Oakwood Close, Wendover, HP22 5LX
The Chilterns MS Centre provides valuable services to people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a degenerative condition that is the most common cause of neurological disability in young adults. The MS Centre provides a number of supportive therapies and treatments such as physiotherapy, oxygen treatment, hydrotherapy and occupational therapy, we also have a very active Carers support service. It treats up to 280 patients each week and 6-8 new patients are referred to us every month.
MS is endlessly variable, totally unpredictable and can lead to a loss of independence, severe disability and isolation. Importantly the Centre also offers social and emotional support to its members and their carers who live within a roughly 25 mile radius of Wendover.
The Chilterns MS Centre was established in the 1985 in Princes Risborough before moving to a facility on the RAF Halton hospital site in 1990. In September 2012 it moved to fantastic new purpose built premises as part of the redevelopment which has significantly increased the services available to members but has also increased yearly ongoing costs to £750,000. The Centre relies on supporters’ generous donations and fundraising for most of its income as it only receives a small amount of funding from the NHS. The MS Centre also relies on its valuable volunteers in many areas from fundraising, to the café to reception and is always looking to expand this team. We are very proud of the work we do and and are happy to give guided tours of our wonderful facility, or pop in for a cake and a cuppa from the Centenary Café!
To aid income we hire out our now excellent facilities for anything from meetings and training, to group exercise classes and Hydrotherapy. The Centre is also open to supporting people with other conditions, where possible and at a cost, particularly through Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. The Chilterns Sports Clinic (www.sportsinjuryclinic.org.uk) is also run out of the Centre, with all proceeds from it going directly back to the charities core reason for being.
