About The WEA

Welcome to the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) Southern Region.  The WEA is a national adult education organisation with more than 100 years of experience in bringing education opportunities to adults of all ages and backgrounds.  If this is your first experience of the WEA, why not visit our national website for an in-depth guide to the organisation – it’s history, mission, vision and values.

The WEA’s Southern Region includes Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire (including the Isle of Wight), Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Sussex.  Our regional map shows where we are currently active.  Our courses and ‘day schools’ (one-day activities and workshops) take place in a range of venues in or near these locations.

The Region delivered a total of 1,429 courses and some 28,000 course hours in 2012-13.  63% of course hours funded though the national SFA contract were delivered as ‘targeted’ provision – courses created to address specific learning needs or for a certain learner group, e.g. those wishing to improve their employability.

The Southern Regional strategy is to:

  • Support the existing thriving branch provision, delivering a cultural education across the region
  • Focus funding increasingly towards community provision in deprived areas, in the main urban areas and the coastal strip
  • Diversify income by taking opportunities to develop provision which is complementary to the region’s main stream provision.
