A41 advance works – ducting in the verge, footway and carriageway

Construction works will begin along the A41 Bicester Road from Tuesday 15 June. These works involve the installation of new ducting along the A41 between the Rabans Lane junction and the Paradise Orchard/Sir Henry Lee Crescent junction, in preparation for the major works which are programmed to commence at the end of July/beginning of August, with the aim to improve journey times along the A41 Bicester Road corridor.

The ducts are required to enable new communications equipment (CCTV, ANPR cameras and Variable Message Signs) to be installed and to link existing traffic signals with new signals at the Jackson Road/Dickens Way junction.

The advance works – which are expected to take around 5 weeks to complete – will take place on the following roads:

  • A41 Bicester Road
  • Jackson Road
  • Dickens Way

In order to reduce disruption as much as possible, working hours will be 9am-4pm on A41 Bicester Road and 9am-5pm on Jackson Road and Dickens Way. The majority of the work will not impact the carriageway as it can be completed on the footways and verges, with pedestrian diversions where required. All residents will be able to gain access to their properties as usual during the works, but delays may be encountered at peak times.

Temporary traffic signals will only be in operation between 9:30am – 3:30pm to minimise disruption to the network.

There will be 2-way lights in operation along Bicester Road and 3-way lights on Jackson Road and Rabans Lane. The lights on Jackson Road will be manually controlled so that Jackson Road remains green in both direction and only changes to red when a vehicle wants to exit the Tesco side road. This will greatly reduce the likelihood of traffic backing up onto the roundabout. There will also be no weekend working.

Cllr. Steve Broadbent, Cabinet Member for Transport, commented:

“While these construction works will cause some temporary inconvenience, once completed, they will improve journey times and the general traffic flow along the busy A41 Bicester Road corridor.

“Funding for these construction works has come from Section 106 developer contributions, in this instance, mainly from Berryfields development contributions.”
