Aylesbury MP tells Prime Minister to pay up for local link roads

Rob Butler, MP for Aylesbury, today (21 February 2024) called on the Prime Minister to speed up construction of link roads around the town.

At Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons, Mr Butler said: “Key to the much-needed regeneration of Aylesbury are new link roads to cut traffic congestion.  Money from the cancelled part of HS2 is meant to be paying towards them, which is only right given the destruction that’s being caused by the construction of the first part of this unwanted railway. But the cash hasn’t arrived yet. So can my Right Honourable Friend assure my constituents that they will get the roads they need, so they can spend less time sitting in traffic jams, and more time growing the local economy?”

Mr Butler’s question was met by loud cheers from fellow Conservative MPs.

In response, Rishi Sunak confirmed that final decisions on funding would be announced soon, adding that Mr Butler had campaigned tirelessly for the roads, including meeting ministers on several occasions.

Afterwards, Mr Butler said: “Too many people are spending too much time sitting in too many traffic jams in Aylesbury. The link roads are absolutely vital for the future success of our town, and I’ll keep up the pressure on the Government to play its part in getting them built as quickly as possible.”
