Bib Gourmand Award for community owned pub The Russell Arms

Buckinghamshire has a new dining star in its midst – with the announcement that, just 16 months after being re-opened, The Russell Arms in Butlers Cross has been recognised with a Bib Gourmand by the highly regarded Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2017.

October’s announcement also marked the 20th Anniversary of the Bib Gourmand – Michelin’s distinction for good value, good quality cooking. This year the guide includes 140 Bib Gourmands with only 4 to be found in Buckinghamshire. The Hundred of Ashendon, The Coach, Marlow and Three Oaks, Gerrards Cross.

The Michelin inspectors said of The Russell Arms: “You’ll find walkers relaxing at the tables to the side and a large terrace to the rear. Daily coffee mornings are followed by a great value lunchtime ‘plat du jour’…. The chef knows how to get the best out of his ingredients and dishes are packed with flavour.”

The pub is managed by the successful team who also run The Bell in Stoke Mandeville. Owner, James Penlington, commented; “We are incredibly proud, any recognition is fantastic for the whole team but a Michelin award is certainly something we are delighted to receive after running the pub for such a short time.”

“The Russell is a fantastic community pub with really superb food, local ales, cocktails, fine wines and artisan spirits. We were very pleased to be asked to take on the stewardship of the pub last year and this award adds to the recognition the team get daily from the support of our guests & shareholders.

“Special mention must go to Head Chef, Dan Scott, who has worked tirelessly since the beginning. His team source local, seasonal ingredients on an on-going basis. Daily specials enable us to take advantage of the freshest of these local ingredients to create simple, tasty plates of food that you don’t need to break the bank for.”

The pub was saved from closure, and is still owned by, members of the local community in 2012. The management of it was handed to The Distinct Pub Company in April 2015. Licensee – Alice Robins.
