Blue-green algae at The Rye

In recent days, the Council has been taking precautionary measures for public safety at The Rye in High Wycombe while waiting on the outcome of the Environment Agency’s inspection into algae in the dyke.

The Environment Agency has now confirmed the presence of blue-green algae. It can be hazardous to people and animals so for the time being, please avoid the water at The Rye and don’t let dogs into the water. Unfortunately, for the moment, boat hire is suspended.

The Environment Agency advice is to let the algae clear naturally so as to avoid it breaking up and moving further down river. We are pleased to say that the change in weather has already reduced the threat but the measures must remain until we are satisfied it’s safe for the public to use the water as normal, so until then, please do take extra care around the dyke.
