Buckinghamshire Council becomes the first local authority in the UK to support AWorld
On Earth Day 2022, which takes place on Friday 22 April, Buckinghamshire Council will become the first local authority in the UK to support the AWorld app.
AWorld is the official platform in support of ActNow, the United Nations campaign for individual action on climate change and sustainability.
The AWorld app guides users towards living sustainably. It does this by showing you how much energy or water you can save by making small changes to your daily life and creating new habits – such as putting the washing machine in eco wash mode or unplugging your charger as soon as your phone is fully charged.
Download AWorld for free to see the difference small changes can make. Once you’ve logged into the app, you can also join the Bucks Climate Challenge team, so you can be part of the county-wide effort in reducing carbon emissions and living sustainably.
Promoting the app is just one of the ways that Buckinghamshire Council is helping everyone to reduce their carbon emissions and lead Bucks to a net zero carbon goal by 2050.
In honour of Earth Day 2022, the council is taking action to reduce unnecessary carbon emissions within their buildings by asking staff to do everything they can to turn off electrical devices when not in use, and to switch off lights and reconsider things like unnecessary printing.
The Council is inviting residents to join them on this carbon reduction day to see how much energy they can save by turning things off.
Peter Strachan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change & Environment, said:
“It’s fantastic that we’ve become the first local authority in the UK to use the AWorld app. The app is an innovative way of encouraging people to take climate action as well as measuring our successes as a county.
“Small changes can add up to a big reduction in carbon emissions, which benefits not only the environment, but also your pocket, at a time when energy bills are so high. Once you start noticing all the ways in which you can cut back, it’s easy to form new habits. Personally, our family are now very careful to shop for local produce and maximise our domestic recycling.
“The theme for Earth Day 2022 is ‘invest in our planet’, and I’m delighted that Buckinghamshire Council is leading the way with our Climate Change and Air Quality Strategy and our £5 million fund to tackle climate change. We have a variety of large projects to reduce energy at the Council, such as installing heat pumps and converting vehicles to electric, but on Earth Day we want to focus on the small things we can all do to make a difference.”

“Earth Day is an opportunity to think about what we can all do to help protect the planet and I hope everyone in Buckinghamshire will join us in focusing on reducing their energy use today.
“Our family has been doing our very best to reduce our emissions, and this has included changing our outside front door courtesy light that used to be on all night to one that is activated by movement. We also buy as much local produce as possible and recycle where we can. In addition, I’ve also recently switched to driving an electric car.”
