Chiltern Society opens up its extensive photographic archive
The Chiltern Society is opening up its massive archive of photographs of the Chilterns area to help promote the region.
There are more than 7,500 images taken in 220 locations. Some record the Chilterns as they were 60 years ago but the majority have been photographed more recently. It is the largestonline photographic collection of the area.
The pictures have been taken by Society volunteers belonging to its PhotoGroup.
Victoria Blane, Head of Marketing and Membership, said the Society, aregistered charity, would welcome requests to use the photographs from all sources, including commercial ones. Please contact the PhotoGroup’s website editor, Quiller Barrett webphotos@chilternphoto.org.uk
“Educational establishments and charities can use the archive’s high resolution images free of charge. We only ask they credit the photograph to the copyright holder and reference the PhotoGroup.
“We are also promoting commercial usage, such as requests from a firm’s publicity department or an estate agent. All we would ask is a suitable donation to the Chiltern Society.”
She added: “The archive reflects over 15 years of steady growth, mostly based on members’ individual projects. As well as photos illustrating towns, villages and hamlets from Goring, in the south of the Chilterns, to Hitchin in the north we also have special collections, featuring, for example, Chiltern flora and fauna, walks, churches, rivers, canals, railways, history, windmills, the last Chilterns chair bodger and local industries”
The archive can be viewed on the website www.chilternphoto.org.uk
