Chilterns Heritage Festival
This September, The Chiltern Society will be launching the first ever Chilterns Heritage Festival. From 22nd September – 6th October, a series of exciting events will be taking place across the region that are designed to celebrate the diverse heritage of the Chilterns. This festival of experiences promises something for everyone to enjoy.
With exclusive visits to iconic Chiltern houses, historical open days, heritage walks and a huge range of other special events, this extraordinary festival will help people to learn about Chilterns heritage and open it up to both the local public and those who live beyond the Chilterns. The Festival will bring together historic buildings, museums, landscapes and organisations charged with keeping our heritage alive.
Among the 25 special events organised for the public by the Chiltern Society is an Iron Age weekend at the famous Wendover Woods, where families will have the opportunity to meet the Iron Age inhabitants of Boddington Hillfort, and help them with their everyday jobs like grinding grain, making butter and cooking stew. There will even be a chance to help build a replica Iron Age roundhouse. Other events include pop-up cinema screenings at the National History Museum in Tring and at the Hellfire Caves in West Wycombe. There are also exclusive visits to some of the area’s most famous attractions including Chenies Manor, Stonor House, the Chiltern Open Air Museum, Hartwell House and Milton’s Cottage to name just a few.
Other especially arranged events include a Roald Dahl guided trail and afternoon tea in Great Missenden, an afternoon at the Wormsley Estate owned by the famous Getty family near Stokenchurch, and history walks around some of the area’s prominent market towns including Berkhamsted and High Wycombe.
The Chiltern Society’s Vicky Askew said: “We are thrilled to launch our first annual Chilterns Heritage Festival. We’ve created a fantastic programme of events that really does offer something for everybody. It’s a great platform to showcase the very best of Chilterns heritage and we are confident that the public are going to love it!”
