Climate Action Wendover – June 2020
Grow to Give
Climate Action Wendover is supporting Grow to Give, a local campaign to help feed those in need by growing more food in our gardens and allotments to give to our local food charities.
The Vineyard in Aylesbury houses a food bank and community fridge as well as using surplus food to make nutritious ready meals for clients. On an average month they have 500 visits; in April this has shot up to 1200, highlighting the need at the moment due to the pandemic. Any other local food charities who need help are also welcome to get in touch.
Grow to Give was recently started by one of our members who wanted to help those impacted by Coronavirus. We have no idea how long the impact of the pandemic will last, but for those who can, growing some extra food this summer will be a big help. So what can you do? We’re asking people to intentionally grow more (or start for the first time). Lots of us are sowing seeds at the moment, maybe don’t throw those extra seedlings away, plant up some extra pots, window boxes or growbags and go for a bumper harvest!
It doesn’t matter how much or little you can grow, whether you have a large allotment plot or a small balcony to grow on, it’s about what we can achieve if we all work together.
Grow to Give is forming a local growing community, including local allotment associations (Ashbrook, Hogtrough and London Road) and back garden growers in the local area. We will have a few locations around Wendover where any produce can be dropped off and our volunteers will help take this to The Vineyard on a regular basis throughout the growing season. It will all be done in the safest way possible, given the current restrictions.
