College Student Gets behind the Scenes at Mix96
Aylesbury College Sixth form student Loretta Vasco, age 18, is absolutely delighted to have been taken on a six month work placement at local radio station Mix96, through their Mix96 Academy.
Once a week she is working on the breakfast show alongside regular presenters Darren Scott and Katy Brown, researching for the showbiz news section, editing audio for the ‘£1000 Minute’ competition, choosing questions for the ‘£1000 Minute’ and editing snippets to create a short re-spin of the show to air throughout the day.
Katy Brown from Mix96, said: “We created the Mix96 Academy in order to give local young people who are studying media the opportunity to get hands on work experience in a live, broadcasting environment. Working alongside the Breakfast Team means an early start and working at a speedy pace to turn around work to support our team and the station for the day ahead. Loretta has been with us for over a month now and it’s very clear how hard working and ambitious she is. Even at the crack of dawn she arrives in the studio, bubbly, smiley and full of beans and it’s a pleasure to have her on the Academy. We’re sure she’s got a bright future ahead of her!”
Loretta, who studies English Language, Creative Writing and Film Studies A Levels, applied for the Academy after a visit to the College by presenter Katy Brown late last year. The Mix96 Academy offers work placements to 10 students each year. Students spend one early morning each week (0630-1000am) for six months with the Mix96 team. Applicants must be studying a recognised media course, or aiming to find permanent work in radio to apply.
Loretta said: “Working in the Mix96 Academy is an amazing opportunity to have an intense insight into radio production. It’s giving me a great experience as well as training, and I’m hoping it’ll help me secure a place on my dream multimedia course at University.”
