Council’s Christmas present appeal has its best ever response thanks to the generosity of residents
The people of Buckinghamshire have responded to the challenge of coronavirus by being more generous than ever in support of the 2020 annual Christmas present appeal for the county’s disadvantaged children. This year’s Appeal is part of Buckinghamshire Council’s ‘Helping Hand’ initiative to help those in the county most in need during these difficult times.
Thanks to all the donations received since the launch of the Appeal last month, approximately two thousand vulnerable children and young people across the county will receive a Christmas present this year. The presents will be distributed to children and young people by the Council’s Children’s Social Care teams in time for Christmas.
Cllr Paul Irwin was behind the start of the present appeal six years ago, and continues to lead the annual campaign: “People always react really positively to the annual present appeal, but the generosity people have shown this year towards our vulnerable children and young people, who might otherwise have no presents at all to open on Christmas Day, has been above and beyond. Thank you so much to everyone who has helped us smash through our target and collect an amazing £29,000. And on top of that there’s also been a huge response across the county through donating gifts – the people of Buckinghamshire have big hearts and you have really shown that through our Christmas appeal.
“I’d also like to say a big thank you to the volunteers and organisations that have helped raise money and collect donated gifts, or have helped with the logistics, sorting and purchasing that ensures that each child or young person receives something that suits their age and interests at this special time.”
Mark Shaw, Buckinghamshire Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “The annual present appeal plays such an important role in bringing some extra Christmas cheer to those children the Council works with through social services, and also to a wider group of children we’re aware of whose families have often seen very challenging times over the last year. The appeal makes such a difference, and that’s why I get personally involved too – it has been very inspiring to see at first hand the level of grassroots enthusiasm and generosity.”
Ali Siddle, a community volunteer who has been involved in the annual present appeal for four years, said: “It’s been incredible to see the heartfelt response to this year’s present appeal right across Buckinghamshire. I’m constantly touched by the effort and commitment of individuals and communities who are so focused on making Christmas special for these children and young people, many of whom have had an especially difficult 2020. Thank you everyone for your wonderful generosity.”
