People who live and work in Denham or Iver are being invited to come along tolocal meetings to learn more about dementia and what they can do to support people living with the disease.
‘Dementia-Friendly Communities’ is a joint initiative between Buckinghamshire County Council and the Chiltern and Aylesbury Vale Clinical Commissioning Groups of GPs. The aim is to help people with dementia to remain independent for as long as possible by raising awareness and understanding of the condition amongst the wider local community.
The two meetings, one in each village, are both being held next week:
Denham – Tuesday, January 26that theDenham Manor Care Home in Hailings Lane, between 12 noon and 1 pm
Iver – Wednesday, January27that the St Peter’s Centre, 1 Thorney Lane North, Iver between 6 and 8 pm.
Mike Appleyard, Cabinet Member for Health & Wellbeing at Buckinghamshire County Council said, “Nearly 7,000 peopleacross Buckinghamshirehave been diagnosed with some form of dementia and the number is rising. It’s a priority for the County Council to help them retain their quality of life in their local community, and the Dementia-Friendly Communities initiative focuses on achieving this.”
Roger Reed, local County Councillor for Denham, added,“Most of us will know of someone in the family or wider circle who has had to live with dementia. If we can succeed in making our communities more dementia-friendly, in removing the stigma and make local activities more inclusive, then it will be easier for the individual and their carer, to live well for a longer time.”
Denham and Iver will bring the total number of communities to be developed as ‘dementia-friendly’ to six. Stokenchurch, Great Missenden, Buckingham and Burnham were alllaunchedlast year.
A toolkit and videos have been developed so that communities can understand more about dementia and find out how to make it easier for those living with the condition to remain included as active members of their local community.
