Dementia Friendly Wendover

John Colet School will have assemblies that week about Dementia Awareness.Wendover Junior School has already spent a couple of years training its pupils about dementia awareness and they are devising a questionnaire about awareness for people to complete on Launch Day.

Several organisations are holding drop in events in and around Wendover before and during Launch Week. The main focus is on Thursday 18 May when the Library Room and its forecourt will have many stalls and opportunities to discover more. Wendover Community Library stalls will include: Alzheimer’s Society, Chiltern Music Therapy, Confidence to Care, Lindengate (mental health charity), Prevention Matters, Trading Standards (scam prevention), TVP (crime prevention).

There will be workshops in the Library Room from 10am. Chiltern Music Therapy Silver Singers will demonstrate the benefits of Singing for the Brain; local solicitor Stuart Fanthan will explain about modern Powers of Attorney – both financial and health aspects; Jacqui Sheppard of Home instead will discuss how you could become a Dementia Friend, or even a Dementia Champion; Chris Holden of Trading Standards will invite you to become a Scam Champion to protect the vulnerable.

Wendover Dementia Alliance is compiling a list of local people who have undergone training to become Dementia Champions. If you are such a person, please contact 01296 625445.

Lady Grey Tea Room has donated a celebration cake to support the Launch. it will be cut by a local personlaty at 11am on the forecourt.

Local Produce Market, Saturday 20 May: the opportunity to buy Twiddle Mitts. People with dementia tend to fiddle with buttons and blankets. Twiddle Mitts are specially designed to provide visual, tactile and sensory stimulation as well as having the added benefit of keeping hands warm. Donations of wool, fabric, ribbons, buttons etc gratefully received.
