Dolly’s final journey

Dolly Saville was just a few weeks short of her 101st birthday (19 April) when she passed away on Tuesday 24 February 2015.

Her funeral took place on Thursday 12 March in glorious sunshine.

It was her wish to pass through the Red Lion on her final journey. Hence the market traders and shoppers were treated to a cortege led by the funeral director walking in front of the hearse down the High Street with three following cars. People stopped to pay their respects. The cortege used the Back Street/Great Lane route for easier access through the Red Lion arch. Dolly’s colleagues were out in force to greet her and acknowledge a pause. Then the cortege continued into The Witchell, Pound Street and into Church Lane. It was met at the lych gate of St Mary’s by Curate Rev Michael Hunt and Reader, Rev Glenys Newman who conducted the service together.

The church was packed with family and friends including her great great granddaughter Darcy Mae. Kim, Dolly’s granddaughter, made a very moving tribute as did Fuller’s Brewery. Everyone was invited back to the Red Lion for refreshments afterwards.
