Fighting Plastic – Scruples

Even before Sir David Attenborough famously shocked the world with his revelations about plastic pollution in Blue Planet II which was screened in late 2017, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall exposed people to the non recyclable coffee cups used by the major coffee shop chains in the UK. Plastic straws are no longer routinely offered to drinkers.In June the BBC announced its initiative Plastics Watch.

The BBC documentary “Drowning in Plastic” was shown on Monday 1 October. Several readers wrote to Wendover News asking if there is anything we in Wendover can do to help clean up the world wide mess which has been created.

On page 27 of the March print edition of Wendover News, local resident Barbara McGillivray announced that she was taking on the challenge of reducing her dependence on plastics, click here. She was looking for likeminded people to help her in this quest. The October 2018 print edition of Wendover News, page 21, showed youngster Billy who was inspired to collect 6 black bin bags full of litter around Wendover during his summer holiday.

Local company Scruples has already had a staff meeting to see what they can do to reduce their carbon footprint, eg clients can bring certain shampoo and conditioner bottles to their premises for refilling rather than buying a new bottle each time.
