Firecrest Pub Complete Sahara Desert (at work) Challenge

On Tuesday 21 January 2014, staff from the Firecrest pub, Wendover Road, presented a cheque for £4,277.05 as their Sahara Desert ‘walk at work’ Challenge came to an end.

Organiser Sam Lafferty, manager Karen Nicol and the hardy pub team – armed with pedometers, set a target of walking the equivalent of the Sahara Desert from December 1st for one month while at work. A total of 2,983 miles was completed by pub staff over the four weeks.

Customers to the pub have kindly been donating to the fundraising effort – all in support of the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC), which needs to raise over £600,000 this year to keep essential Hospice services running for local families affected by life-limiting illness. An amazing £400 of the grand total was raised on Christmas Day – even though the pub was only open for six hours!

Teresa King, FNHC Community Fundraiser said: “This was such a unique challenge to be involved in and we can’t thank Karen, Sam and the Firecrest Team enough for this wonderful donation in aid of the Florence Nightingale Hospice. Thank you everyone who supported the team along the way and to all the customers who donated to the cause.”

She added: “I know Karen and Sam would like to thank all staff and customers who have supported their Sahara challenge with a special mention to Martyn White, who helped to raise a fantastic £2,603.45 and Mel Clubb who raised over £750.00.”

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity offers a variety of challenge events throughout the year including running challenges such as the MK Marathon, or if cycling tickles your fancy why not take on the London to Paris cycle ride?
