The Firecrest
We are spoiled for choice in Wendover and Weston Turville to have a great variety of eating establishments within walking distance of our homes but it is worth remembering that if we’re in the car, we can call in at The Firecrest, originally known as the Halfway House, just to the south of Wendover on the A413. A warm welcome awaits you: on a cold night in February it was great to see the well stacked open fires and feel their glow on arrival; lit candles in the inglenook gave a nostalgic feel; all age family parties were able to enjoy an early meal.
The Firecrest was refurbished just before Christmas and work was done to make the entrance bigger and easier for cars to enter or exit so there really is no excuse for just passing it by. It has been serving the public since 1827 and the feel of the place is very homely. The garden is lovely in fine weather.
Fixed price menus have good value two or three courses at both lunchtime and in the evening, open from 11am to 11pm. Specials include Pie Wednesday, Fizz Friday and Saturday Steak Supper. The a la carte menu offers meals for children, vegetarians and vegans as well as a drinks menu covering cocktails, soft drinks, international wines and cask beers as you would expect. Another speciality seems to be duo meals including a starter with two types of mushrooms or two types of pâté and a main featuring pan-fried lamb and shepherd’s pie. Pies come with a wide choice of potatoes. All these were excellent and the seasonal vegetables, three, slightly overcooked, were generously portioned as were the puddings.
The Firecrest is an ideal place for a pleasant meal out – don’t forget to book in advance if you can, 01296 628041 or online.
