First time buyers escape rental trap and make permanent move to Milton Keynes

A couple from Sri Lanka have recently purchased their first home in Milton Keynes to wave goodbye to renting and step onto the property ladder.

A typical street scene at Woburn Downs

Shamalee Karunaratne (53) and Aruna Ratnayake (55) moved into Barratt Homes’ development Woburn Downs on Watling Street after previously renting a property in Berkshire.

Personal Assistant, Shamalee, and Medical Records Administrator, Aruna, have now settled into a three bedroom semi-detached home.

Shamalee said: “We wanted to stop renting and we have always wanted to move into a brand new home. We found the Woburn Downs development by chance, and it is perfect!

“The development gives us the best of both worlds – easy access to work and excellent transport links to London, but also a sense of countryside living. There is lots of greenery in the local area and we love the local farm shop.”

The couple took advantage of the Help to Buy scheme, which made it possible for them to buy the home they wanted with a smaller deposit.

Shamalee continued: “We went to see one of the show homes and instantly liked the house. The plan was exactly what we were looking for, and we really liked the fact that we were able to choose our flooring, tiles, kitchen appliances and more whilst the home was being built.

“Our purchasing experience has been so smooth and the service by both the sales and site team has been excellent. In particular, I would like to say a big thank you to Sales Adviser Bernard for organising little events so we had the opportunity to meet our neighbours.

“Our neighbours are really friendly and lovely, and we’re very excited to be a part of this excellent new community.”

Alison Raine, Sales Director at Barratt Homes Northampton, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Shamalee and Aruna to the wonderful community we have at Woburn Downs.

“As we pride ourselves on delivering excellent customer service, it’s always great to hear the couple had a positive moving journey. We’re looking forward to seeing how the community continues to grow at this development.”

Due to its popularity, Barratt Homes at Woburn Downs has sold out until 2023, but those looking to make a move to the area this year can discover a range of four bedroom detached homes with David Wilson Homes at Woburn Downs.
