Girlguiding – a Personal Journey
My journey in Girlguiding started before I was even born. 19 years on, after Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and a very small stint at Rangers (I tried!), I am now a Leader in training at 1st Wendover Brownies and have helped out at Sketty Brownies whilst at university in Swansea.
Throughout this time, Girlguiding has enabled me to do lots of things I would never have done, including being able to make the best s’mores EVER and on turning up to a new school, finding a friend I made almost 5 years prior (I’m still in contact with her to this day). It has also allowed me to add to that vital section of ‘interests’ that sends shudders down most young peoples’ spines when writing their CVs. I was shown how important this is by the fact in a recent successful interview, the interviewer said, ‘If you can look after a group of young Brownies you can do anything, in my opinion’.
So here I am asking everyone to think about if they have one evening free to help out in their local community by volunteering in Girlguiding. Not all roles are leadership and just being there as a helper can allow groups to carry on providing important skills to young children and adults.
