Help the RAF with Special Commemorative Battle of Britain Mosaic
The Royal Air Force is asking the public to help with a special project to commemorate those who took part in the Battle of Britain in 1940. From Tuesday, 11th August we are asking members of the public to upload appropriate photos from their computers or mobile devices to create a 75th anniversary Battle of Britain Commemorative Mosaic. The aim of the mosaic is to raise awareness not only of “The Few”, the pilots and aircrew that fought in the battle, but also “the many” often unsung others whose contribution during the Battle of Britain was also vital to the RAF’s victory in the skies above Britain.
The RAF is asking the public to take a moment to upload a photo of their own choosing to the mosaic, whether it’s a “selfie” or perhaps for example a family member who fought in WWII. This is a great opportunity for the public to acknowledge and offer a fitting tribute to all, including those from the Commonwealth and occupied countries, such as France and Poland, who fought and gave so much and sometimes everything to defend Britain.
The Battle of Britain Commemorative Mosaic was launched on Tuesday’s edition of BBC1’s The One Show. One Show presenter Joe Crowley said: “I think it is an incredible opportunity for everyone to get involved to commemorate a real landmark event. The Battle of Britain lives long in our memories and this is a way to really show our respect for those who served their country and fought in Britain’s hour of need.”
The mosaic is of an iconic photograph of Hurricane and Spitfire fighters in close formation and encapsulates the spirit of the Battle of Britain. The initial mosaic is composed of RAF archive images, which will be replaced as members of the public upload their own photos. Once a photo is on the mosaic it can be easily located using a search button on the mosaic web page. It’s expected that in September as part of Battle of Britain commemorations a large artwork poster of the mosaic composed of the photographs uploaded by the public will be reproduced and exhibited in the RAF Museum in North London.
