The Hospice of St Francis – Hospice News – July 2019
The Hospice of St Francis is now 40
The Hospice of St Francis celebrated its 40th birthday in June. Thank you to everyone who has been involved so far in our birthday celebrations and helping us to celebrate and remember special people. It’s because of so many individuals and groups across West Herts and South Bucks that we’ve come so far and have gone from being able to help just 20 people a year in 1979 to over 2,000 people today. To watch a short film whizzing through the last four decades and to relive memories of the last 40 years visit www.stfrancis.org.uk/40
We are thrilled to announce that The Hospice of St Francis has received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) which recognises the outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. Since the Hospice was founded by the dedication and passion of a small group of volunteers 40 years ago this week, volunteers have been its heart and soul. This award is for all of them; past, present and future.
Hurrah for Ralph!
Hurrah for 81-year-old Ralph Davies, who sang a solo at a recent Chess Valley Male Voice Choir concert despite living with severe breathlessness caused by Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Ralph has been seeing our consultant Dr Sharon Chadwick and attending our IPF Support Group to build up his strength and confidence. “Recently my breathlessness has got much worse,” he said. “I thought my singing days were over but Dr Chadwick said I mustn’t give up as it’s something I love. I’ve found my voice again and sang with surprising confidence. There’s nothing stopping me now!” Watch Ralph’s video on our website.

Our fundraising efforts started in 1979 with the Snowball Coffee fundraising campaign which focused on a gift of 25p. In the 2000’s it is 40p a day that will help us to thrive in the future. Please do help us be here to help people to live their precious lives well for the next 40 years by considering a gift of 40p today (£12 a month). Thank you so much. stfrancis.org.uk/donate
