Househunters go wild for Buckinghamshire development with homes for animals and humans being occupied

Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ award winning Aylesbury development is celebrating its 700th resident moving in, but it’s the wildlife that’s taking centre stage with over 350 animal homes now installed.

Kingsbrook aims to be one of Britain’s most wildlife friendly housing developments, with 60% of its area allocated to green space that benefits wildlife and people. The housebuilder has worked closely with the RSPB, Buckinghamshire Council and Southern Ecological Solutions (SES) to create a nature-rich and ecologically healthy environment.

As of November 2020, Kingsbrook is home to 263 swift nest-bricks and nest-boxes, 46 house martin nest-boxes, two barn owl nest-boxes and 43 bat boxes.

A number of nest-boxes for other birds, including woodpeckers and starlings, have also been installed within Kingsbrook’s wider landscaped areas, and hedgehog highways – discreetly located hedgehog-sized holes in the fences between gardens – ensure our prickly friends can move across the development safely.

Rachel Bodiam, Associate Director at SES, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Barratt and David Wilson Homes and the RSPB at Kingsbrook, disproving the common perception that development and biodiversity are mutually exclusive.

“Kingsbrook sets the standard for commercially viable housebuilding which addresses biodiversity loss and supports healthy well-functioning ecosystems with better places for the benefit of nature and people.”

Kingsbrook is set to benefit from wildlife corridors that allow nature to move around and through the green space and residential areas as well an abundance of open green space including ponds, parks, orchards and meadows.

Simon Francis, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Thames, said: “With over 60% of the UK’s wildlife in decline, it’s more important than ever to make sure we’re providing homes for wildlife as well as our residents.

“We know nature makes people healthier and happier and we look forward to welcoming more residents and wildlife to this thriving community.”

Kingsbrook is a thriving community which has excellent facilities and endless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.
