HS2 and the Green Tunnel
The Ellesborough Road Ground was given to Wendover Cricket Club by Lionel Abel-Smith, Lord of the Manor in 1956, and the first home match on it was played in May 1957 (Wendover won). The last match (weather permitting) was on 19 Sep and the last event on Sat 25 Sep after which all the buildings will be cleared by 30 Sep, see also https://bit.ly/3zYevKF. The top photo shows removal of hedge and badger sett by early March. The middle photo shows regrowth by mid-September. HS2-owned houses in Ellesborough Road were also boarded up, see also pages 8 & 17. A temporary relief road will be built here behind the houses. Access will stay for the remaining residents.
From Friday 1 October HS2 will start bringing in machinery necessary for the many works to be undertaken in the field bounded by Ellesborough Road, including demolition of houses. The detail of the cut and cover “Green Tunnel” can be seen on the HS2 map right. The relevant map can be seen in full at https://bit.ly/2X6ulEt.
