The Lionel Abel-Smith Trust 2017

At their pre-Annual Meeting buffet lunch this year the Trustees head from two talented young girls from Wendover, Katie Malliff and Olivia Phillips. They talked enthusiastically about the commitment they give in their daily lives to fitness and playing squash that has led to their success in Regional and National Squash Championships.

Since last year’s AGM, the Trust received 11 applications for grants and 7 were awarded totalling £4,189.

At the meeting, the Chairman, Mrs Clayton, welcomed Mr John Mayhead who has replaced Mr Mike Beard as the Trustee representing The Wendover Society. Also in attendance were Mr Steve Bishop and Mrs Caroline Harrington as ‘Trustees Designate’.

The Trustees considered 21 applications for grants. Because of the major expenditure needed on two of the Trust’s Listed properties in Pound Street, with a further vacant property needing refurbishment, the Trustees were not able to make grants on a similar scale to previous years. The Trustees had to base their decisions on the most pressing need. They very much regret that they were unable to make a grant to a number of applicants this year.

A total of £7,880 was awarded at the meeting, these grants being distributed as follows:-

Education: £2,250

Elderly: £700

Individuals: £3,030

Organisations: £1,900

In addition, the third payment of £10,000 to the Wendover Youth Centre, which was promised in 2015, was made.
