Local Face: Kieran Thomas

Kieran Thomas was born in Aylesbury but his family moved away and back again before he started at Bedgrove County First School. From Bedgrove Middle School, he went on to Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School. At the end of Year 11, he felt the the Grammar School system did not suit him. He looked at the local colleges for sixth form, but felt that he needed more teacher support to make him work. He decided to investigate John Colet School, an unknown quantity to him.

As soon as he came around the corner and saw the rural setting, Kieran liked the place, a favourable contrast to the townscape he was used to. Many people who grow up on the campus take for granted the beauty of the surroundings, especially the hills, and the simple, practical design of the buildings. John Colet School had the feel of a modern, lively place, and as he stepped through the door, he found he enjoyed the company of the students, too.

Kieran chose to study History, English Literature and Sociology in small classes with very supportive teachers, and has never looked back. He find the learning environment has really boosted his confidence. When he leaves school, Kieran would like to go to university and later become a politician, or perhaps a magician. During his electoral campaign, he ran on a “NO PROMISES” ticket, so as not to disappoint anyone.

Kieran’s big ambition during his term of office as Head Boy is to boost the social side of school life, bringing people together. The official catchment area is quite large – Wendover, Weston Turville, Aston Clinton and Halton, and many people com from Aylesbury, too. There are two bus loads every day, and next year there will be three (and a new on-campus bus stand). It is important that everyone is made to feel part of the school community.

Kieran was particularly impressed by the Leavers’ Ball at the Civic Centre last May. The whole sixth form was invited, partners from outside the school were made welcome, and everyone dressed formally, including the staff. It was a rite of passage for the Year 13 Leavers and a bonding experience for Year 12. It served as a inspiration for Kieran, who wants to offer more opportunities for sixth formers to come together socially.
