Milton Keynes archaeology in the spotlight
Milton Keynes, as a new town, is sometimes thought of as having no history, but nothing could be further from the truth, as some fantastic Roman archaeology which has recently been on display shows.
A rare Roman coin forgers kit, found at Fenny Stratford, has just returned from a loan to the British Museum, where it has been starring in their Hoards: A Hidden History exhibition. The exhibition, which ran for 5 months, was seen by over 150,000 people. Currently cared for by Bucks County Museum, the forgers kit is one of the many important Milton Keynes finds that will be returning to the city when the new museum expansion opens in 2018.
Another Milton Keynes hoard, found just north of the city is currently part of a ground breaking scheme to put real archaeological objects into primary schools, linking in to the new national history curriculum. Sponsored by Milton Keynes Council, and organised by Bucks County Museum, the Rubbish Money tour has taken real Roman coins from the 4th century AD into 6 MK schools, enabling the pupils to get up close and personal with their local heritage. The tour will be continuing in 2017, and any school interested in taking part should contact the museum.
