Milton Keynes pupils keep pedaling after wheelie good donation from leading housebuilder

A Milton Keynes school went up a gear in The Big Pedal (19th April – 30th April) after a generous donation from David Wilson Homes that encouraged them to keep them pedalling.

Water Hall Primary School in Bletchley, close to David Wilson Homes’ Woburn Downs development, received a number of bike bells to help them tackle The Big Pedal.

The Big Pedal is run by Sustrans, a UK walking and cycling charity, which takes place over ten days. On each day of the challenge schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling, walking, scooting or using a wheelchair to school.

Adele Howson, Deputy Head at Water Hall Primary School, said: “Our families and pupils are really supportive of our efforts to reduce the traffic around the school site.  The majority of our families walk to school and we are working alongside Ellie, our transport planner, to help us achieve our Modeshift Stars accreditation.

“We have been giving out the bike bells donated by David Wilson Homes as prizes for those who are continuing to travel to school in an active way.”

The aim of the campaign is to inspire pupils, staff and parents to adopt a healthier lifestyle, and take active journeys to school.

In fact, in 2019 only 2% of 5-16 year-olds in England cycled to and from school, whilst 37% travelled by car.[1] These statistics prove the need to promote travelling in an active way, to encourage children to live a healthy lifestyle.

Alison Raine, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes Northampton, said: “We hope our donation to Water Hall Primary School will help to encourage the children to cycle more, whilst also helping them to keep safe when on their bikes.

“As a leading housebuilder, it is important to us to help contribute and support the local communities close to where we build.”

Woburn Downs has established itself as an ideal family-oriented development through its wealth of family-focused features. These include highly rated primary schools and secondary schools nearby, nurseries, cycle ways and play areas and an upcoming New Health Care Centre.
