Leader opens new town centre car park
A new town centre car park opened to the public in Aylesbury today (Wednesday November 18)and all drivers were given free spaces on its first day.
Martin Tett, Leader of Buckinghamshire County Council, officially cut the ribbon for the open-air pay-and-display car park, opposite the Waterside Theatre.
He said: ‘The public have told us that parking in Aylesbury town centre is important to them so we are delighted to be able to open this today. We decided to make it free for the first day to give something back to shoppers and businesses, and to also promote the fact that this car park is here.
‘The wider plan is to bring houses, restaurants, and a new public boulevard to the town, and the new car park brings us another step nearer to achieving this.’
The car park is sited in Waterside North behind the old County Council offices, opposite the Waterside Theatre, with the entrance being in Exchange Street. In all, there are 98 spaces including six bays for Disabled Blue Badge holders.
It is part of the Waterside North Masterplan, a collaboration between Buckinghamshire County Council, Aylesbury Vale District Council and Aylesbury Vale Advantage. The extra spaces will now allow for the redevelopment of part of the existing Exchange Street car park by the District Council. This area has been earmarked as a location for more restaurants, shops, housing and public space.
Motorists will have to pay to park from 8am on November 19. Charges will be in line with Exchange Street car park next door.
