New Cinema lauching in Aylesbury

A new community cinema launches in Aylesbury next month, called FUNKY CINEMA, which aims to be one of the most experimental and imaginative cinema attractions in the UK. The venture is spearheaded by Aylesbury businessman Marc John, 49, who has worked in the cinema industry for almost 20 years, including in senior executive roles for Odeon Cinemas and Picturehouse Cinemas.

Located close to the town centre, at the sizeable Walton Parish Hall, Funky Cinema’s big screen programming kicks off on Saturday June 5 with family friendly fare such as HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and the Oscar nominated anime film MIRAI, as well as bringing back 80s date night classics such as WHEN HARRY MET SALLY and the original MAD MAX film (1979).

The cinema will also show a range of prestigious stage performances, filmed specifically for cinema screens, the first being the National Theatre’s CYRANO DE BERGERAC starring James  cAvoy. The cinema will also offer local filmmakers the chance to screen their material and host disability-friendly screenings.

“Aylesbury has never had a community art house cinema,” said John. “We plan to be a breath of fresh air and drive innovative in ways most cinemas never consider. And at only £4.50 for an  adult ticket, I think we’re perfectly priced for the post-pandemic, budget-conscious customer.”

Funky Cinema will prove its zest for pushing the envelope by incorporating pop-up art gallery exhibitions with certain films, where local artists will be invited to exhibit their work, for free, as part of of the cinema’s mission to support local creative talent and think outside the box.

With cinemas in England currently allowed to reopen from May 17, Funky Cinema will follow Covid guidance when it launches a few weeks later on June 5. The cinema will break more new ground by becoming one of only a handful of cinema businesses in the UK to operate a Bring Your Own Bottle (BYOB) policy. Audiences can, for certain films, bring their own alcohol, without any corkage fees, along with soft drinks and snacks being allowed.
