Picasso & the Masters of Print Exhibition

Saturday 2 April to Saturday 2 July 2022

Seven original prints by Picasso, one of the 20th century’s greatest artists, will be displayed in Aylesbury in a loan exhibition from The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum, Bedford.

Picasso & the Masters of Print

Picasso created over 2000 printed images during his long and varied career. The seven prints on display show how he experimented with a wide range of techniques from etchings to revolutionary linocuts. His work represents one of the most creative and diverse periods of printmaking in the history of western art.

Picasso’s prints are accompanied by a wider exhibition of original prints by other influential artists, including masterpieces by historical legends such as Dürer and Rembrandt, 20th century icons such as Matisse and Miró, contemporary artists such as Paula Rego and David Hockney and American printmakers such as Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.

Picasso’s prints, and those of many other artists, were not made in isolation but as part of a collaborative process. He was supported by master printers whose technical ability enabled him to fulfil his artistic visions. Publishers and art dealers then established his reputation as a master printmaker by disseminating his work to a wide audience. This exhibition explores these themes and shines a light on artists, skilled printmakers and forward-thinking publishers through the beautiful, striking and powerful prints they created together.

Mel Czapski, Curator of Art at Discover Bucks Museum, said, “Printmaking is a fascinating medium, filled with energy and creativity. Picasso & the Masters of Print is a fabulous opportunity to see work from five centuries of printmaking and we are delighted that our visitors will have the chance to be inspired by the originality and invention of the work on display.”

The exhibition will run from Saturday 2 April to Saturday 2 July 2022 at Discover Bucks Museum, Aylesbury.
