Plans set in motion for commemoration events in Aylesbury to mark the end of World War I

Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire has outlined arrangements for a World War One commemoration to take place in Aylesbury town centre on Sunday 11 November 2018.

In line with similar events up and down the country, Buckinghamshire will pay its respects in memory of the millions who were killed or came home wounded at the end of World War One, 100 years ago.

The events, including a parade and church service, will be coordinated jointly with The Royal British Legion, Buckinghamshire County Council, Aylesbury Vale District Council, Aylesbury Town Council, St Mary’s Church in Aylesbury, and Chiltern, South Bucks and Wycombe District Councils.

Sir Henry said: “For the last 4 years I have been chairing meetings of the World War One Commemoration Group and I am pleased to say that plans to bring an end to the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One are now reaching their final planning stages. I am extremely grateful to all the organisations involved for their support in making this event happen.

“We very much hope that the people of Buckinghamshire will turn out in their thousands – not just in Aylesbury – but at every Remembrance Day event across the county on 11th November. Whilst we want the day to be a day of remembrance we also want it to be a day of celebration and for everyone to feel the relief that was felt on 11 November 1918 when this most horrible of wars came to an end.”

Chairman Netta Glover said: “We owe so much to those who fought on our behalf in World War One and this is an opportunity for everyone to give thanks and remember those men and women and the ultimate sacrifice they made.”
