Refurbishment of St Mary’s is Complete
Great news Wendover! The refurbishment of your parish church – St Mary’s – is finally complete. For many of you, there will be a huge sigh of relief because you have been heavily involved in making decisions, meeting builders, allocating limited budgets and can at last relax! (until someone finds you another job of course!!) The last remaining task of replacing and upgrading the toilets in the adjoining ‘St Mary’s Centre’ is in process.
We want to thank everyone for their support of this major project, which has taken the best part of two years to fundraise for, co-ordinate, project manage and support.
The reason for this item is to remind Wendover what a wonderful space St Mary’s is for use by the whole community, and to consider ways in which you as villagers might consider making the most of this outstanding building.
Contrary to what some may believe, St Mary’s is not a hiding place for religious zealots or only to be used by the ‘clique’ in God’s gang – but a fantastic and welcoming community resource, built over 700 years ago, and recently refurbished to ensure that maximum benefit can be brought to the whole village.
Since reopening in April 2011 a whole host of groups and individuals have used the building, in addition to the regular church services and activities. St Mary’s regularly hosts musical entertainment, including jazz musicians, Wendover Choral Society, a drumming group and of course the much loved Wendover Music which hosts four annual concerts featuring world class artists.
The older generation are enjoying the upgraded space, and the U3A (The University of the Third Age) use St Mary’s as their meeting place because it is one of the largest and most accessible venues in the community. It may surprise some that the Scouts used the church weekly last winter and the AA meet in the building throughout the year.
Since the refurbishment, St Mary’s has hosted two successful barn dances and started a regular film afternoon, using its new high definition audio and visual equipment.
The complete calendar of events will soon be published on our website (www.stmaryswendover.org.uk) but meanwhile, if you are looking for a meeting place, do consider St Mary’s. For bookings, please contact the St Mary’s Office – 01296 623123 or pop into the shop, @st mary’s, 11 The High Street Wendover.
