Returning the Walnuts to Walnut Tree Meadow
Volunteers from Climate Action Wendover have planted 12 walnut saplings alongside a small copse of “whips” in Walnut Tree Meadow.
Rob Toplis, tree planting coordinator for CLAW, said “We are grateful to the landowners, Buckinghamshire Council, for permission to plant trees in this area. This planting will help our ambition to plant a tree for every resident over the next few years.”
We were intrigued to see this historic map that the Parks Officer at Bucks found, clearly showing an area of parkland with mature trees between Aylesbury Road and the Wendover Arm Canal and called Walnut Tree Meadow in 1884! We are getting the opportunity to recreate that space and future generations will benefit from the walnuts.
And, if more historic proof were required; whilst boring the hole to bury a sapling, a preserved walnut shell was discovered at a depth of 300mm in water sodden soil, no idea how old it might be but surely not a coincidence.
We are grateful to all the volunteers who have helped us with tree planting over this winter season, the total planted to date exceeds 3000! And we really appreciate the financial support and encouragement of the Woodland Trust and Wendover Parish Council to create the first piece of the Queens Green Canopy in Wendover, marking Her Majesty’s platinum jubilee!
