Secure Future for Bucks UTC Student
As the school term draws to a close and exam results are anxiously awaited, Bucks UTC student Greg Smith already knows his future is secure. Greg has been studying IT at Bucks UTC for two years and starts his new job with security specialists, Phoenix Datacom, in September. Greg knows his new employer well, having been on continuous work placement with the company, alongside studying for his BTEC Level 3 Diploma in ICT and Cisco qualifications at the UTC.
Phoenix Datacom provides solutions andprofessional servicesto improve the performance and security of data centres, networks and applications. John Carson, Managing Director, Phoenix Datacom, said:“We could see Greg’s interest in cyber security early on in his placement. We set him some special projects to complete and were impressed with Greg’s enthusiasm and the overall outcome. He’s a very well-liked member of our team and we’re delighted he’s joining us in September.”
Greg will join the company as a Support Technician and will gain extensive practical experience of network monitoring and security solutions to complement his already strong technical knowledge. Phoenix Datacom is confident Greg will be as successful as their first apprentice who now works on major monitoring and security projects for many major household names.
Greg Smith said:“My education before coming to the UTC was patchy and I really didn’t know what elements of computing interested me, or what I saw as a potential career. The course enabled me to experience the many different areas in IT, broadeningmy knowledge. I don’t think I would have had this opportunity in a normal school environment. I am passionate about my future career and really excited to see what’s around the corner.”
At the end of 2013, Greg won the UTC’s Principal Award for his attitude to his work.
