Tribute: Edmund Nurse

We were saddened to hear of the death of Edmund at the age of 83. A service of thanksgiving and commendation was held at Ellesborough Parish Church on the 25th April.

Edmund and his late wife Eileen and their three sons moved to 1975, to The Warren on the Ellesborough Road, Ellesborough, adjoining the Wendover parish boundary. They made many friends in both parishes and were active socially and in supporting community life. Both joined the congregation at Ellesborough Church and Edmund was still a member of the choir at his death.

Edmund was a gifted amateur musician and had been a leading flautist in the Aylesbury Symphony Orchestra. He also sang with the Wendover Choral Society over many years and was at one time their Treasurer and then Chairman. Among his other interests and active involvement were Probus and the U3A. From 1943 to 1947 Edmund was in the Merchant Navy and served widely, in the North Atlantic Convoys, to the northern ports of the Soviet Union – Archangel and Murmansk, off Italy and in the Pacific. Coming ashore he qualified as a Company Secretary and until his retirement held this position at the Ovaltine Company at Sevenoakes and then in Hemel Hempstead.

Just before Eileen’s death in 2001 they moved into Wendover. He was a quietly spoken, charming man, who willing undertook many roles in supporting those activities and organisations he joined. He will be greatly missed by his friends in both parishes. Edmund is survived by his three sons Christopher, Michael and Jeremy and seven grandchildren.
