Wendover Bowls Club – update, November 2022

First I must congratulate our team playing in the Chiltern and Thames League on getting through to the final. Though they didn’t win they finished in Bronze medal position.

We finished our outdoor season with the match between teams representing the Chairman and the Captain. This game is always popular as it is our last chance to play on grass before we move indoors. We managed to squeeze in eight rinks across the green which made it pretty cosy and your bowl didn’t have to stray far before you found you had joined the game next door. After a long afternoon’s effort the Chairman’s team won by one shot whereupon we all retired to the clubhouse for a splendid supper.

Next morning more than thirty members turned up to put the green to bed. In a couple of hours all the benches and chairs are stored away, the mats retrieved from the ditch around the green and the furniture in the clubhouse reconfigured for the indoor season. It is always a bit of a worry how we will play after the change from outdoor to indoor bowis. They are such different animals, one requiring a degree of physical strength and the other a more delicate touch. Well, we started on a high in our first game with a whitewash against Marsh Gibbon, winning all four of our games. Now all we have to do is keep it up for the rest of the season. One can only dream.
