Wendover Bowls Club News – July 2019

It is hard to believe that half of the year has gone already. At the end of May a large number of members were treated to a proper cream tea. When I say proper I mean PROPER, with dainty sandwiches, scones with lashings of clotted cream and lovely cakes. I can honestly say it matched anything I have had in the poshest of hotels. It was no uprise that some members had difficulty bending down to deliver their woods for several days.

Our open evenings finished at the end of May having had a good response. More than a dozen people handed in completed membership forms. Many of the forms were from younger people which is heartening.

The Club has never looked better. The tubs and flower beds are a joy to behold and are a real credit to the members who tend them. Such hard work deserves a pat on the back. The green is in fine fettle and bowling well. Again thanks are due to the mowing teams and our greenkeeper. The roller remains a bit of a black art at present until we have had some training sessions. Traveling sideways while controlling the direction of travel with pedals and steering with handlebars will take a bit of learning.

Our results are mixed against some other clubs. Personally I feel that our policy of inclusivity of all members in competitions is the right way to go. Some clubs we play against are so competitive that you can feel the atmosphere when they lose. It is nice to win but not at all costs. New members are actively encouraged to take part in matches and I’m sure it contributes towards a happy club.
