Wendover Bowls Club – September 2021

This Covid has a lot to answer for. Just two days before our Gala was due to be played one of our members tested positive. As she had been playing and using the clubhouse there was no alternative other than to cancel and shut the Club down for a few days. All the clubs we had invited had to be contacted and fees returned so, not only was it a lot of work, there was a big loss in revenue as well.

It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of our outdoor season and the indoor mats will soon be brought into the clubhouse. By the time this gets into print the Finals Matches will have been played, marking the end of all the internal club matches. One important fixture has already been decided, the Ladies versus the Gents. The numbers were not quite even so a couple of ladies suddenly found they had changed gender. Even with the help of the fair sex the Ladies were triumphant and the Gents were presented with the wooden spoon.

I have mentioned before the slightly odd language that is sometimes used in bowls. It must be one of the only games that a gentleman can call down the green and tell a lady that she is a bit skinny (has not bowled wide enough) or that she has too much weight (bowled too fast). Of course none of our ladies are skinny or too heavy, just slim or cuddly. I think I’d better sign off before this hole I’m digging gets too deep.
