Wendover Cricket Club – August 2019 Update
The President’s Day event at Witchell involved some 30 players in 4 teams in a round-robin 7-a-side series of games, with the best 2 competing in a final. The U15 team impressed and there were 3 particular moments of fielding brilliance, that had the batsmen and fielders looking on in disbelief. Archie Tatum (U15) took a boundary catch diving backwards at full stretch, inches off the ground; Tom McPartlan held a similar one but diving sideways, whilst Richard Jones held a low screamer one-handed off his own bowling.
The President’s team of vets/coaches won all their group games and set a competitive score in the final, but that was easily overhauled by the big hitting of George Robinson and Matt King, who both retired shortly before their team won.
Re other cricket:
The 1st XI have had mixed league results recently; they beat Ballinger 2nd’s by 9 wickets thanks to George Robinson’s 88* & 3 for 35, plus Jonathan Seabrook’s 4 for 35. A record total of 325 for 5, George Robinson 153 and Jean-Marc Maujean 53 saw Cadmore End 2nd’s defeated by 146 runs, but there have been losses to Aylesbury and Hawridge & Cholesbury.
The 2nd XI ended their winning streak by having a tied match v Aylesbury, but remain undefeated and lie 2nd in the table. They beat Lacey Green by 52 runs, Shanil Patel hitting 87 and Chris Watts taking 4 for 21. Against title rivals Downley 2nd’s, we scored 138 but bowled them out for 95, Jamie Matthews 3 for 33, to win by 43 runs.
