Wendover Remembers

The Wendover Remembers Steering Group continues to meet and hopes to coordinate all local activities concerning World War One during the next few years. This is important as it would be foolish for two or more organisations to plan events at the same time rather than spreading them out so that they are open to a greater audience. Also, researchers have already discovered that they could be duplicating work so it makes sense for all relevant groups to keep in touch with one another and use resources wisely, especially time and person power.

Britain declared war at 11pm on 4 August 1914 so there will be a commemoration of this solemn moment at that time on Monday 4 August 2014 around the War Memorial on the Manor Waste. This will be the first event of Wendover Remembers and there will be more details in the August edition of Wendover News so watch this space.

One suggestion is to make a quilt. There are various possibilities. Wendover Sewing Bee leader, Plainstitch Deb, is hoping that they might produce a suitable quilt as developed by participants. For information about Deb’s work please go to www.plainstitch.blogspot.co.uk . If you are interested in taking part, please contact Deb on 07903 743293 or deb@plainstitch.co.uk . This idea could be extended into schools with each interested pupil making a square and the whole being assembled by Deb. Please get in touch to take part. The morning Wendover Sewing Bee will meet in St Anne’s Hall from 9.30am to 12 noon on Tuesday 1 July. This type of activity mirrors the groups who came together to knit and sew for the troops during WW1.

Many people have started to ask questions about the people named on the War Memorial. Wendover Free Church has already started researching the 21 names which appear on their Roll of Honour Boards. The fruits of their researches will be available for all to see on Saturday 13 September when they plan to have an exhibition in Wendover Christian Centre.

In the June 2014 edition of Wendover News a plea was made for anyone who has a copy of the Wendover Gazette or the Wendover Magazine from this period, the Wendover Remembers Steering Group would be delighted to see it. please contact Wendover News here or Wendover Parish Council here.
