Wendover Remembers, Wall Hanging Sewing
The Wendover Sewing Bee has been very busy coordinating many groups in Wendover to make the Wendover Remembers Wall Hanging.
Interested parties were invited to submit ideas for designs representing what happened in this area in World War One. Sewers were commisioned to interpret these ideas into 12 inch by 12 inch blocks which will form the centrepiece of the hanging.
Schoolchildren were invited to make poppies for a colourful background to the work. Each child wrote their initials onto the centre of a flower then sewed it. The centre was ironed onto the petals and another row of running stitches added. Each poppy was then sewn onto a six inch by six inch block. Pupils at both John Hampden and Wendover CofE Junior School took part in late June.By special request, some residents of Cherry Trees Residential Home asked if they could join in so on 1 July the Sewing Bee moved to yet another location for another session of poppy making.
The wall hanging will be completed over the summer ready for its first outing at the Rememberance Parade on Sunday 8 November. It will also be displayed at the Let the Chilterns Sing Concert in St Mary’s on Sunday 21 November.
All the groups and organisations involved in making the wall hanging will have a chance to display it in their premises then a permanent home will be found for it within Wendover. It will be accompanied by a small booklet explaining how it came to be made and identifying all who took part. Many thanks to Deb McGuire who masterminded the project.
