Wendover Youth Centre Social Action
During the Covid-19 Pandemic we have all had to change our daily lives and routine. This was no different for the youth centre which stopped all face to face activities. However, as part of our continued youth activities we have been working closely with St Mary’s Church and a group of young people to develop a social action group to help the community during this pandemic, especially the elderly who are isolating for the next few months. The group came up with two social action schemes; food parcel and pen pal scheme to help those who are vulnerable, isolated and lonely in Wendover and the surrounding villages.
The food parcel scheme has involved young people donating basic food items to create a parcel. We have then identified individuals in the community who have been unable to get out of their homes and were in need of food.
The pen pal scheme has involved young people writing letters to isolated, lonely individuals in Wendover. This has developed into young people and the isolated individuals becoming pen pals. It has been amazing to see how this has benefitted all who have been involved. After a few rounds of letters, the young people decided to get their individuals an item which they felt would cheer them up. This included poems, cakes, jigsaws and plants.
We have received funding from the councillor crisis fund to expand the scheme to get more young people involved and to reach more individuals who are isolating during this pandemic. This will be done throughout May and June.
When safe to do so the scheme will conclude with an event where everyone who participated will be invited. The event will be so everyone can meet who they have been writing to and to celebrate the new friendships that have developed through the scheme.
