Work – carry us through
Work: Local businesses Sew Special and Thumbsie Ltd turned their hand to making face coverings.
Jo Bates of Thumbsie Ltd turned her needle to making fun fabric face coverings for children early on in lockdown, see page 16 in the June print edition of Wendover News, or click here. We had so many customers ask us if we could make children’s face masks that we felt we had to do something to help. We’ve had families tell us that their children are anxious about leaving the house without wearing a face mask or that their child wants a face mask to match their Thumbsie®. So, we decided to turn our attention to face masks to do ‘our bit’ making them for our customers. We have been overwhelmed by the response to our reusable face masks, with amazing feedback. Thumbsie® fabric washable face masks are made from poly cotton or cotton and are available in three sizes. They will suit children aged 3 to 16 years old. The face masks are secured with elastic and can be altered using a plastic toggle on each side of the head making it comfortable to wear.
Meanwhile, Zeiba Monod of Sew Special: When we first went into lockdown, like many sewers, I turned to making as much PPE as I could to support our amazing front line heroes. In early April I was approached by Sarah H, a sign language interpreter working in local hospitals and GP surgeries. She wanted a face mask that she could use at work and that would not prevent her clients from being able to lip read; hence the first of many Communicator Masks. This clever little design features a plastic window in order to facilitate lip reading. I was thrilled I could help one of our amazing frontline key workers. Since then, thanks to a Go Fund Me set up by Sarah H, I have made and donated over 400 free communicator masks to schools, hospitals, BSL Interpreters and those in need or vulnerable across the whole country.
I also started making and selling adult face masks consisting of 2 layers of 100% cotton with an internal filter pocket and a nose wire to ensure a better fit. They are pleated masks with no vertical seam along the nose and mouth. They are secured with either elastics or ties based on personal preference. These masks are washable and reusable.
From the beginning I set out to give 50% of all proceeds to the NHS Covid-19 Appeal and I am thrilled to say that over £500 was donated in the first 2 months.
