Worldskills UK Competition held at Aylesbury College

Aylesbury College played host during the week of 19 May to regional heats for the 2014 WorldSkills UK competition.

Further education students from across the South East took part in the preliminary rounds at the College, which tested the talents of trainees in aromatherapy, beauty therapy and media makeup. Competitors were assessed on workplace skills and had to demonstrate excellence in their chosen trade.

The heats saw 88 entrants try their hand at a range of challenges over the course of two days. Competition was strong, with students demonstrating some stunning designs and top-class skills.

Karen Mitchell, Principal of Aylesbury College, said: “The WorldSkills competition is a great opportunity for students to showcase their talent and helps to prepare them for their future careers. It has been a pleasure to host WorldSkills at Aylesbury College and the event has been thoroughly enjoyable for competitors, staff and students.”

The activity on the day is designed by industry experts to enhance qualities valued by employers such as teamwork, time management and working to deadlines. Competitors who achieved the highest scores are now invited to compete in the Skills Show UK Final in November at the NEC, Birmingham.

Valerie Kay, Trustee of the Vocational Training Charity Trust, added: “The WorldSkills heats are a chance for students to really show us what they can do and we have seen some fantastic work over the two days here. I would like to thank Aylesbury College for hosting the heats in their fantastic salon facilities and for organising what has been a wonderful event.”
