Wendover Youth Centre (WYC) – Serving the Young People of Wendover

The recent WYC AGM allowed the Trustees to thank supporters, leaders, volunteers, sponsors and helpers. The Centre is particularly fortunate to share the Wharf Road site with the schools. This places WYC at the centre of a community which cares passionately about its local clubs and services.

The AGM showcased youth activities run by the Centre. A presentation from Paul on Amazing Donkey, which runs for 10-12 year olds, was followed by one from Adam, of Premier Sports, on the activities it organises including holiday, pre- and post-school clubs.

Tess, who runs drama clubs on a Saturday morning gave the perspective of a hirer. Bridget talked about the important partnership with St Marys church, which includes financial support for a joint youth worker. Sara, of Aylesbury Youth Action (AYA), outlined a new joint project to gain an enhanced knowledge of young people needs and aspirations in Wendover and the surrounding communities.

It is estimated that the Centre has 2000 contacts with young people aged from about 5 up to 18 per month.

The Centre is funded by the local community. It needs to generate about £65,000 each year to continue with current services and facilities. The Centre is indebted to Wendover Parish Council (WPC), the Lionel Abel Smith Trust (LAST), Budgens and all who hire the Centre, for their encouragement and financial support.

In future, WYC is looking to expand and deepen its offering by:

  • Increasing its staff by employing an additional session youth worker, and finding more volunteers,
  • Hiring the Centre to local groups and individuals,
  • Deepening and refining the services it provides to the local schools,
  • Converting the grass area into an all-weather surface,
  • Seeking new Trustees to contribute to this important work in the Community.

In summary, the Centre has gone from an underutilised facility to a vibrant localre serving the needs and aspirations of the young people of Wendover. Thank you for your support.
